NZ Construction Alliance 2022 Overview

2022 has been a year of consistency and growth, strengthening relationships and sharing knowledge for NZ Construction Alliance.

We have successfully completed 29 locations withing a programme of works for a key governmental client to the required timeframes in 2022. This is a remarkable achievement given the Omicron outbreak earlier in the year, and the various challenges affecting our industry. A big thanks to our NZ Construction Alliance partners for making this a success, and to our Relationship Manager, Ollie Dent who has done a superb job managing this contract. This programme of works is a great example of how our delivery model works with one point of contact communicating with the client and coordinating with the partners to roll out a project in multiple locations across the country.

Another example is the Retirement Home project in Kerikeri – where we pulled together a deal with Kalmar Construction (Auckland partner), Trigg Construction (Northland partner), and using expertise in CLT from Foster Construction (Bay of Plenty/Waikato partner). This collaboration enabled us to solve a problem for a key client and shows what can be achieved across our network.

The year started with a few exciting developments in the first quarter - with Darrell Trigg of Trigg Construction becoming a Director of NZ Construction Alliance.  We also launched the NZCA Development branch of the business, which will see another possibility for company growth and future opportunities.

There have been increasing opportunities for learning, knowledge sharing, and strengthening relationships within the organization as we held two company-wide conferences, the first Health & Safety hui, and an increasing number of face-to-face meetings as the covid restrictions eased.

The first conference of 2022 was held in Rotorua during March, where we had three guest speakers – David Kelly (Master Builders), James McQueen (BDO) and Georgie Fenwick (Frankie IT). We had Kelly Quinn (a leading construction barrister) as our guest speaker in Napier and there were many interesting discussions facilitated amongst the attendees.

Heath & Safety Conference

The inaugural Health & Safety conference in Wellington, allowed Health & Safety leaders to come together to share experiences and learn from each other. This group has also been meeting monthly in a virtual conference which has been a highly beneficial and successful aspect of the alliance.

Other highlights and successes from the partners this year include Darrel Trigg’s presentation at Constructive, and the various awards won at the Registered Master Builders New Zealand Commercial Project Awards:

  • Trigg Construction: received the Special Award for the Hundertwasser Art Centre and Wairau Māori Art Gallery. This project won Gold in the Tourism and Leisure category as well.

  • Foster Construction: received a Gold Award in Selwyn Street Student Accommodation and Ebbett Te Rapa, and Silver Awards for Urban Homes, Bayfair Redevelopment, and the McCaw Lewis 586 Victoria Refurbishment.

  • Scott Construction: were awarded Gold for their Oceanview Apartments project, and Silver for Nelson Building Society’s (NBS) flagship facility.

  • Amalgamated Builders Limited: received a Gold Award for the Rakiura Museum Te Puka o Te Waka in Stewart Island.

To wrap up – it's been a great year overall and we look forward to seeing what’s in store for the alliance in 2023.

From the NZ Construction Alliance team to you, we hope you have a happy and safe summer holiday and enjoy a well-deserved break.
