APL Hautapu was not the first venture between Fosters and APL, however, it was certainly the largest and most ambitious to date. The 418m x 109m building of over 47,000m2 is an extraordinary example of how innovation and foresight can bring sustainable solutions, even amongst the challenges of scale and size. APL and Fosters share similar philosophies and visions around sustainability in design, and have managed to create a state-of-the-art structure which raises the bar for New Zealand industrial builds and creates an inviting space for all those who utilise it.

The construction approach required stringent product selection and sophisticated waste management. The latest technologies in environmental design have been utilised, including hybrid mechanical services, electronic LED lighting and climate-based daylight modelling. Fosters continues working with the client, using their experience in documentation and reporting to work towards a 5 Green Star NZ v3 Industrial Design certified rating for the project.
